SONG DEMOS

Story

*in loving memory of Jesse French-Assange*

This song matters. It's a clear example of why most writers write.

Honouring the very precious life of a young boy, Jesse French-Assange, who passed from cancer when he was 6 years old, this song was written by simply feeling. It's managed to reach and affect many people the world over throughout the process of ultimately winning an international songwriting competition - Thank you so much everyone for your continued support.

Kat came to my home a short while after speaking with her friend Jo who'd shared some really sad news - after a period of being in remission, her little boy's cancer had returned and Kat, who'd known Jo for many years and felt terribly sad and helpless on hearing the news, did what most writer's do; she wrote (& started singing) her feelings into a song.

She already had the first verse, half of the chorus & melody established before arriving and after discussing what this precious little soul's difficult journey meant to her and together, we finished it. I felt so blessed to have shared the experience of creating this song and feeling firsthand the beautiful ripple effect, honouring Jesse, along the way.

I know this song's journey has meant a great deal to Jesse's mum, Jo and his immediate family and we hope that it continues to keep Jesse's spirit, and that of all his other little 'soul' mates, flying high. All proceeds from the sale of this song will be donated to the foundation set up in his memory (link above) assisting other families who are unexpectedly ambushed by the ticking hands of time.

Sending light and blessing to each and every one of you...

(An acoustic version of this song is also included under 'song masters')

Lyrics

V1

I remember the day; it was a year ago, when you called me

And you told me, ’bout your boy

Choking on words I asked you ‘Jo, is there anything I can do?’ and you say

‘If you can cure him, that’s my wish’

CH

He’s got a heart as big as Rome

And his life to you is more than, he will ever know

He has, super powers and make believe

You give him hope, that’s all he needs

V2

You know it makes me laugh, this crumpled photograph

’cause when I see his smile

He sets me free and he rescues me, with his super human style

Trust in his magic; oh, that’s my wish

CH

He’s got a heart as big as Rome

And his life to you is more than, he will ever know

He has, super powers and make believe

You give him hope, that’s all he needs

Bridge

Ground Zero; our hero, he’ll carry you on his breeze

He caught me, he taught me, to fall free

CH X2

He’s got a heart as big as Rome

And his life to you is more than, he will ever know

He has, super powers and make believe

You give him hope, that’s all he needs

He’s got a heart as big as Rome

And his life to you is more than, he will ever know

He has, super powers and make believe

You give him hope, that’s all he needs

(OUTRO - acoustic version only)

All he needs, all he needs, oooooooh

You give him hope

A mother’s love

Story

This song is the result of my first collaboration outside of songwriting workshop groups. The lyrics were written late one night during a sweltering summer heat wave when off in the distance, several blocks away from my home, I could hear screaming. It made me consider what might be happening—what distress other souls might be dealing with—behind the privacy of brick walls.

(Verse two; line one) 'I hear distant screams of torture', started the idea flowing... and at a much later date, Wendy very kindly put her melody to them, finishing the song.

Lyrics

V1

Are you frightened of rejection?

Kissing bottles till they’re empty

Liquid/liquor is your poison that

Numbs away your pain

Moments of perfection are

Drowned by floods of sadness

I’m trying to steer your spirit free

Stop pulling on the reins

CH/TAG

Even angels take a tumble when they fly into walls, but

There’s a cushion of love that saves them when they fall

V2

I hear distant screams of torture

Someone else’s choking

They’re trying to float on water but

The fire’s closing in, and

There’s oil on the surface of

The liquid that surrounds them

They’ll soon be suffocating on

The fumes of smoke and gin

CH/TAG

Even angels take a tumble when they fly into walls, but

There’s a cushion of love that saves them when they fall

Bridge

Put the past to bed tonight; just let it be

Free your troubled mind and walk beside me

CH/TAG

Even angels take a tumble when they fly into walls, but

There’s a cushion of love that saves them when they fall

V3

Aren’t you tired of riding

A round-a-bout to nowhere?

You’ve been around and back again

A million times or more

Leave that baggage here

There’s too much guilt to carry

The sun will rise tomorrow with

A new day to explore

CH/TAG

Even angels take a tumble when they fly into walls, but

There’s a cushion of love that saves them when they fall

OUTRO

Even angels

Even angels

Even angels

Story

Fragile Boy's an interesting song, exploring the fine line between love and hate... and the strange anomaly that you can love something that's not good for you and/or hate something because it's too good to resist.

It had been held and recorded in a totally different genre by another artist for their debut album, but as often happens in creative industries, the project, for some reason, never came to fruition.

This song was one of those that seemed to evolve after deep conversations about life - sometimes writing can be the best therapy!

Lyrics

V1

Won the fight, but I lost the prize

Tangled in this mess of lies

Let my lips fall upon your feet

Somewhere

PC

In my silence you feel me there

Read my soul leave me feeling

CH

Hate you, ’cause you make me love you more

You torture me with kindness

Like I’ve never felt before

Hate you, when my backs against the wall

Would you save this little fragile boy?

V2

Wanted to like who was looking back

Looking back at me

Got caught out and the truth spilled out

Why, why me? (Why do I?)

CH X2

Hate you, ’cause you make me love you more

You torture me with kindness

Like I’ve never felt before (and I)

Hate you, when my backs against the wall

Would you save this little fragile boy?

Hate you, ’cause you make me love you more

You torture me with kindness

Like I’ve never felt before (and I)

Hate you, when my backs against the wall

Would you save this little fragile boy?

Bridge

Suffocate me with your touch

I wanna drown in you so much

Overshadow me and wash me in your light

Take me to a higher ground

Before I run and can’t be found

Only you can break me down

(I hate you, such a fragile boy)

Torture me, torture me, I hate to love, such a fragile boy

Torture me, torture me, I hate to love you

CH X2

Hate you, ’cause you make me love you more

You torture me with kindness

Like I’ve never felt before (and I)

Hate you, when my backs against the wall

Would you save this little fragile boy?

Hate you, ’cause you make me love you more

You torture me with kindness

Like I’ve never felt before (and I)

Hate you, when my backs against the wall

Would you save this little fragile boy?

OUTRO

Will you save this? Will you save this? Will you save this?

C’mon and save this

Fragile boy

Story

These words were inspired one day, observing a carer, on an outing, with 'special needs' teenagers at my local shopping centre. I found it perplexing that most passersby avoided eye contact and chose to miss the experience; watching these young adults who were so delightfully immersed, moment to moment, in their outing.  Made me wonder why we can't all live with such perpetual joy.

In this instance the lyrics came first, followed by Wendy creating a lovely melody to complete the song.

Lyrics

V1

Maybe you feel I don’t shine, quite as bright

Turning away, convinced you’re being polite

But if you try and look through these eyes

You won’t see that same old story

CH

Don’t be scared; don’t stop and stare

No need to stand way over there

Take a chance and show you care

And you’ll hear my spirit sing, beneath these fragile wings

V2

Maybe my mountains are harder to climb

What’s easy for you might-take-me much more time

But feel, like this heart, beating inside of me and

You won’t see that same old story

CH

Don’t be scared; don’t stop and stare

No need to stand way over there

Take a chance and show you care

And you’ll hear my spirit sing, beneath these fragile wings

Bridge

Like you I ache; sometimes I break

I need my time to cry

But even with these fragile wings of mine

I’ll teach you how to fly

CH X2

Don’t be scared; don’t stop and stare

No need to stand way over there

Take a chance and show you care

And you’ll hear my spirit sing

Don’t be scared; don’t stop and stare

No need to stand way over there

Take a chance and show you care

And you’ll hear my spirit sing

Beneath these fragile wings

Kay Bell/Sven Tydeman

Story

Trying to find where I fit as a lyricist only has been really trying at times. Sven Tydeman was another collaborator who graciously opened his doors to work with me.

Melodies in my head are VERY basic. I sent these words to Sven and when he emailed me back the melody he created I was absolutely gob-smacked! Finished ideas like these make me question whether learning an instrument myself would actually be a disservice to a song's potential.

Rachelle Medley’s beautiful vocals finished it off perfectly.

Lyrics

V1

I felt you trickling over my heart

From the first caress I felt your magic start

You didn’t even leave a single part of me-

Aching for your love

Pre Chorus

Sweet surrender's taken/taking over me

You make me tremble when you’re near

CHORUS

I breathe you in, I breathe you out

Now that I know what love’s about

From the (very first) moment you touched my skin

I breathed you in

I breathed you in

V2

I only knew what I had before

But when you touched me ah, I feel so much more

It's seems a fantasy when you’re holding me

Aching for your love (You know I'm aching for, you know I'm aching for)

Pre Chorus

Sweet surrender's taken/taking over me

You make me tremble when you’re near

CHORUS

I breathe you in, I breathe you out

Now that I know what love’s about

From the very first moment you touched my skin (oww)

I breathe you in

I breathe you in

Bridge

I always thought that love was meant to take my breath away

(I've been wrong all along you showed me, there's so much in a touch that words can't say)

But with you now, I know I want to breathe you every day

CHORUS

I breathe you in, I breathe you out (each time you touch my skin can't stop this)

I know what love’s about

From the very first moment you touched my skin (hhhmnn, oooh)

I breathe you in, I breathe you out

Now that I know what love’s about

From the very first moment you touched my skin (Touched my, touched my)

I breathe you in, I breathe you out

Now that I know what love’s about

From the very first moment you touched my skin

I breathed you in (I feel you trembling)

I breathe you in (I feel you trickling)

I breathe you in (come feel me trembling)

I breathe you in (I breathed you in)

Story

Inspired by unrequited romance in a TV show, Inside Out is a simple, melodic song that most people would be able to relate to at some point in time. The words were written long before Wendy put the melody to them. In this instance, she worked along the lines of the melody in my head; however, utilising the same lyrics she's created a second song (see melody #2 version) below, which gives a totally different feel to the finished songs. I enjoy both versions equally.

I've altered the lyrics a little since this demo was recorded.

Lyrics

V1

My head’s okay; it’s just my heart I’m worried about

It hurts me to see you aching from the inside out

PC1

If I could catch magic I’d hold it tight

Keep you close and love you till light

CH/TAG

Until I do

I’ll just keep loving you

Loving you

From the inside out

V2

Don’t want you gone, but don’t want you feeling doubt

Part of me’s hurting too, from the inside out

PC2

This is a brave new world that needs some working out

I can give you the kind of love we talked about

CH/TAG

Until I do

I’ll just keep loving you

Loving you

From the inside out

Bridge

Don’t want to pin you down; I wouldn’t even try

Star-crossed lovers understand

Sometimes their angels need to fly

PC1

If I could catch magic I’d hold it tight

Keep you close and love you till light

CH/TAG

Until I do

I’ll just keep loving you

Loving you

From the inside out

Story

I first met Mike Chin some years ago through songwriting workshops and retreats that we both attended on a regular basis.

When I gave him the lyrics for Kill The Lights, I never imagined he'd come back with a song that had such a unique and extraordinary sound... yet again, a wonderful, unexpected outcome when surrendering to creative synergy!

Lyrics

V1
We’re trying to find a way through the darkness in our heads
Our dreams are ravaged nightly as we’re laying in our beds
The lonely face of moonlight only makes us cry
That hollow mask could be our last goodbye
CH/TAG
Quiet please (kill the lights)
Set the scene (don’t make me fight)
Quiet please (kill the lights)
Set the scene (don’t make me fight)
V2
Who are they to make decisions? Who are they to judge our souls?
Breathing airs of righteousness, adding to the toll
They say that chains are broken and try to cast the blame
But the rules were set (before I joined) before I joined the game
CH/TAG
Quiet please (kill the lights)
Set the scene (don’t make me fight)
Quiet please (kill the lights)
Quiet please
Bridge
Deprivation feeding incubation
Accusations starving expectation
Deprivation feeding incubation
Accusations starving expectation
CH
Quiet please (kill the lights)
Set the scene (don’t make me fight)
Quiet please (kill the lights)
Set the scene (don’t make me fight)
Quiet please (kill the lights)
Set the scene (don’t make me fight)
Quiet please (kill the lights)
Set the scene (don’t make me fight)

Kay Bell/Erinn Sherlock
Artist - Erinn Sherlock

Story

This co-written song won the pop category of the Australian Songwriting Association Awards a few years back. I was fortunate to meet Erinn Sherlock while attending a Songwriting retreat—I sometimes wondered why she never became an artist herself as she could have easily ticked all the boxes that a marketing team would hope for.

She now lives most of her days still happily writing, on the other side of the world but I'm so glad I was able to find time to collaborate with her beautiful, creative spirit before she left these Aussie shores.

Lyrics

V1

And I watched the moon set

As I’m sitting on the edge of my bed

Where another night meets another day

Like another flame, watch it melt away

Oooh yeah, I thought I heard your whispers in the air

How could I, you’re not there, but-

Pre Chorus

What if I could touch you, and ah

What if I could taste you, and ah

What if I could feel you, touching me too?

CHORUS

Wanna play with fire (I'm aching for more)

Feel the heat of your fire (Of what we had before)

You had to leave me but why her? (You walked out that door)

Cause you’ve found a new flame (Found a new flame)

V2

Water falling

Down my head, ’cross the back of my neck

And I’m, trying hard to ease the pain

But it, but it flares right up again

Oooh yeah, I thought I saw your shadow by the stair

How could I, you’re not there, but-

Pre Chorus

What if I could touch you, and ah

What if I could taste you, and ah

What if I could feel you, touching me too?

CHORUS

Wanna play with fire (I'm aching for more)

Feel the heat of your fire (Of what we had before)

You had to leave me but why her? (You walked out that door)

Cause you’ve found a new flame (Found a new flame)

Bridge

When my heart beats fast in the dead of night

And I'm chasing 'round the echoes in the back of my mind

And I’m reaching for your body but you’re not at my side

Just take me back to that-

Night when you took me so impossibly high

Should’ve known at the time by the look in your eye

But I’ve never, ever heard such a beautiful lie

Melting my heart with your-

CHORUS/OUTRO

Fire (I'm aching for more)

Feel the heat of your fire (Of what we had before)

You had to leave me but why her? (You walked our that door)

Cause you've found a new flame, found a new flame

Fire (I'm aching for more)

Feel the heat of your fire (Of what we had before)

You had to leave me but why her? (You walked out that door)

Cause you’ve found a new flame (found a new flame)

Mmn ooh aay, mmn ooh aay aay

Mmn, you've found a new flame, found a new flame

Story

As co-writers, Erinn and I decided to re-record the same song  (above) with male vocals.

From a writing point of view it's really great seeing different interpretations of songs—it never ceases to amaze me what others can do if you give them the freedom to explore.

Kay Bell/Marcel Viera/Alison Lenton-Murphy
Artist - Alison Lenton-Murphy

Story

This song was originally created in a courtyard opposite the beach, on a beautiful summer's day in Sydney. As part of a Songwriting retreat you're randomly put together to try and write something. This day I worked with a brilliant guitarist and vocalist—Marcel Viera and Alison Lenton-Murphy, respectively. We briefly discussed a few ideas and then as Marcel started strumming a melody, Alison and I began throwing around random thoughts and phrases as they came to mind, which seemed to piece together quite naturally.

Alison has since re-recorded the song in a way I'd describe as sending out warm and fuzzy, feel-good vibes. Love the clapping throughout—makes me want to share a beach camp fire, singing way into the night!

Lyrics

V1

I know you're a phone call away

Whispers are nice but don't satisfy me

I'm crossing off another day

V2

There’ll be bacon and eggs on the grill

And your coffee'll be good and strong like you like it

I wonder if you're sleeping still

CHORUS/TAG

I need one lazy day

One lazy day

You've been too long away

Save Sunday for me

V3

I wonder where you'll be tonight

I can't keep track and it's getting harder

I ache to feel your touch excite me

CHORUS/TAG

I need one lazy day

One lazy day

You've been too long away

Save Sunday for me

Bridge

Hurry home so you can save me

Count the weekdays back to lazy

You mean more than Thursday, payday

Without you I'm going crazy

CHORUS/TAG/OUTRO - to fade

One lazy day

One lazy day

You've been too long away

Save Sunday for me

One lazy day

Save Sunday for me (one lazy day)

Save Sunday for me (one lazy day)

Save Sunday for me (one lazy day)

Story

When Kat and I won an international competition, we were invited to attend a songwriting workshop in London and had the privilege of working with producer, musician and songwriter, Jez Ashurst (Boyzone; Will Young; Yuki; Nathalie Bassingthwaite; Delta Goodrem/Brian McFadden).

We decided to write about the difficulties in relationships—more particularly about facing the challenge of ‘commitment’ from the perspective of the habitual saboteur.

Personally, I love the feeling of this song and believe many people will relate to it.

It was an incredible opportunity to work with you Jez - thank you! :)

Lyrics

V1

No one has ever stuck around before

I’m scared and I don’t want to let you in

Don’t try to save me; don’t call me baby

Don’t cross the line – let’s just be friends

PC

Why do you like me?

When I don’t even like me

CH

I’ll knock you down like a sledgehammer

Don’t you know you won’t rescue me?

Back away, back away, back away from me

Or I will blow your world

Blow your world to smithereens, oh-oh

To smithereens, oh-oh

V2

It’s not your job to make me happy

Don’t want to hear you say you understand

I want to hold you close but then the damage shows

I’ll only let you down in the end

PC

Oh you’ll be sorry

Sorry you ever met me

CH

I’ll knock you down like a sledgehammer

Don’t you know you won’t rescue me?

Back away, back away, back away from me

Or I will blow your world

Blow your world to smithereens, oh-oh

To smithereens, oh-oh

To smithereens, oh-oh

To smithereens

PC2

I don’t even like me

So tell me why you like me

Why the hell you like me?

Bridge

I’ll knock you down like a sledgehammer

I’ll knock you down like a sledgehammer

CH

I’ll knock you down like a sledgehammer

Don’t you know you won’t rescue me?

Back away, back away, back away from me

Or I will blow your world

Blow your world to smithereens, oh-oh

To smithereens, oh-oh

To smithereens, oh-oh

To smithereens, oh-oh

Story

With Spinning, the lyrics were written many years before they were magically brought to life by Kat. When she played it to me for the first time I was absolutely gob-smacked (and cried).

It was inspired by my incredible friend, Stephen. If you're ever fortunate enough to find yourself in his beautiful energy, you'll experience that same 'magic' that must always be set free for others to feel. Keep spinning...

Lyrics

V1

You taught me how to breathe

You let me taste your air

Then I let you fly again

’cause you’re needed more out there

PC1

Nothing but smiles surround you

Spreading your magic everywhere

CH

So keep on spinning through the air

Keep spinning, changing those you're near

’cause I never, never, ever knew I could

Breathe

V2

You know, you taught me to feel

And you didn't, you didn’t even try

But I feel things oh so differently now

’cause I'm living, yeah I’m living on your high (high)

PC2

Taking my time in your space,

Where I'll breathe in your air, till we meet there

CH

So keep on spinning through the air

Keep spinning, changing those you're near

’cause I never, never, ever knew I could

Breathe

Bridge

How many have your wings caressed?

Who, sipped from your soul?

Each cup of breath you gave to me,

Was enough, was enough, was enough; enough to save me

CH

So keep on spinning through the air

Keep spinning, changing those you're near

’cause I never, never, ever knew I could

OUTRO

Just keep spinning, round and round

Keep spinning, oooh so glad I found you

Spinning, you helped me breathe

Spinning, you made me believe

Nah-nah, nah-nah, nah-nah-nah

Nah-nah-nah-nah-nah (to fade out)

Story

I really love the finished chorus of this song. Have always felt it would suit a television series like OC or similar—has a brilliant feel to it in my opinion.

This song started off with Kat needing to address an issue she was working through in life and from memory, she had the first few lines worked out and then came to me in the hope of finishing the song.

Lyrics

V1

Unite, do you think so?

And can you honestly say it’ll be okay?

I hope, that you prove me wrong, anyway

V2

Mind you, sounds sweet though

But I’m tired of washing my sheets in grey

Another hue might come about someday

CH

If you’re to get to me

Well you’re gonna have to cross a bridge

That I can see

But you know it’s gonna cost a bid in

Seeing me

You could be down on your knees

Oh (a) change, don’t come, for free

V3

Somehow, seems simple

If yesterdays hands could just fly my way

We’d find youth

Innocence would remain

CH

If you’re to get to me

Well you’re gonna have to cross a bridge

That I can see

But you know it’s gonna cost a bid in

Seeing me

You could be down on your knees

Boy (a) change, don’t come—

Bridge

If you could see your words

Am I enough to hear?

If you could touch my thoughts

You know you’d feel me near

So near

CH X2/OUTRO

If you’re to get to me

Well you’re gonna have to cross a bridge

That I can see

But you know it’s gonna cost a bid in

Seeing me

You could be down on your knees

To get to me

You’re gonna have to cross a bridge

That I can see

But you know it’s gonna cost a bid in

In seeing me

You could be down on your knees

I said (a) change

Never comes

For free

Kay Bell/Sven Tydeman/Anthony Snape
Artist - Anthony Snape

Story

My first attempt at lyric writing happened as a response to the announcement that my home town would host the 2000 Olympic Games.

When the Commonwealth Games followed suit, setting up camp in a neighbouring state some years later, I felt the same compulsion to write something for consideration. I sent my lyrics to Sven Tydeman (who is pretty much a master of everything—music, production and even the occasional vocals) who wrote an extraordinary melody. He then arranged for Anthony Snape to come in to the studio to put down vocals; however, during the recording session Anthony took our collaboration to an entirely new level; somewhere beyond my wildest imagination. This song is the result.

When I heard the finished track I sobbed and sent whispers of thanks out into the ether. This song empowers the human spirit and encompasses the main reason I feel compelled to write.

Lyrics

V1

You have the strength to lift yourself

Be the best

Cast aside your every fear and

Settle for no less

PC

On your quiet road less travelled

We’ll guide you when its dark

Let the sound of our hearts beating

Lead you to your one true star

Chorus

We see the spirit

Deep in your eyes

Breathe in the night

Feel so alive

You can fly

You can fly

V2

Sometimes you find you’re standing still

You can’t breathe

Close your eyes and find yourself

Embracing all your fear

Chorus 2

We see the spirit

Deep in your eyes

Breathe in the night

Feel so alive

You can fly

Bridge

So many times we learn through our lessons

So many times we feel things go wrong

So many times we’re pushed to the line

By something inside

Chorus/Outro

We see the spirit

Deep in your eyes

Breathe in the night

Feel so alive

You can fly

You can fly
